12 ways to connect with your kids

What Does the Bible Say About Parenting?

From the beginning of time with Adam and Eve, we know that parenting has never been easy. The good news is that God has always known that, too! Parenting is a way that He sharpens and shapes us, and He gives us as parents both a calling and a promise.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 paints a picture of what faithful parenting looks like in the everyday moments from talking about God on the drive to school, to praying together at bedtime.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us that these small, consistent, faithful moments matter more than we know right now.

We can cling to the promise that God will guide and equip every mom who seeks Him as we raise our kids. Here are a few verses on what the Bible says about parenting.

15. Psalm 127:3 “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

Even when times are hard, your children are not an accident or a burden. They are a deliberate, precious gift from God. This is straight from the Word of God and expresses His heart for your family.

16. Colossians 3:21 “Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.”

The verse before this reminds kids to obey their parents, but this one is equally as important. How we treat our kids matters to God. Ask Him to help you show patience and grace to them today, even when you don’t feel like it.

17. Hebrews 12:11 “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

Our kids don’t love to receive discipline, but it’s a necessary part of them maturing and becoming who God calls them to be. The same is true for us as parents! But every tough situation is a chance for us to bring our lives under submission to God, and to become more like Him in the process.

18. Proverbs 22:6 “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

On the days when you feel like nothing is working, this verse is a gentle reminder that the faithful seeds you plant in your child right now — even when you can’t see it — will bear fruit in their lives for years to come.

19. Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

We may not think of this as a parenting verse, but oh boy it is! When your kids break your favorite vase, when your teen stays out past curfew (yes it will happen!), ask God to give you a heart of compassion and forgiveness. Tomorrow is a new day!

20. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

The best thing that we can give to our kids is the gift of our faith! Even when it doesn’t seem like it, they are watching YOU to see what walking with God looks like. So what will they learn from what they see?
