Teaching Kids the Lord’s Perfect Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer really is the perfect prayer, and it provides a great guide for children as they learn to pray.

It begins by giving praise to our Creator: “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.”

It proceeds to surrender one’s will to God’s will: “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Only then does it make its first request—a simple petition for the day’s provisions: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Then, it requests mercy, which we agree to receive in the same measure we ourselves give: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

After that, it asks God for His guidance and protection: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Finally, it ends once again in praise to God, the Creator of all: “For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.”

Truly, a more perfect prayer does not exist—which is little surprise considering its Author! This makes it such a wonderful tool for teaching children the power and importance of prayer.

Ideas to Make the Lord’s Prayer Personal

When I say my daily prayers, I like to insert my personal petitions between the lines of the Lord’s Prayer.

For example, after “Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” I ask God to help me overcome the sins and temptations I will face that day and to make me a better vessel for His will to flow through my thoughts and actions.

Or, following “Give us this day our daily bread,” I ask God to bless my work and to give me the strength and insight to accomplish what He has planned for me that day, and beyond.

I believe that helping children develop the habit of prayer not only nurtures their relationship with God but also provides a healing service to our world and its future.

Those who walk with God approach even worldly things, such as a “job,” not as something done for status or money but as a vocation in service of the Kingdom of God.

This is why I created free prayer prints of the Lord’s Prayer specifically for kids to help them learn this important prayer from Scripture.

The prints feature colorful artwork from my picture book The Little Donkey and God’s Big Plan—about a little donkey and God’s very special purpose for him. They’re designed to capture your child’s attention for the purpose of learning this perfect prayer.

If your little ones are in the process of learning the Our Father, I invite you to download the free printables right here!

As your children learn this prayer, encourage them to also add a line or two asking for God’s guidance in discovering the special purpose He has prepared for them.

For if He prepared a big plan for a little donkey, surely He has prepared something just as special for all His little children.
