Have you ever thought about the importance of a father?
Though most of the time it’s mom who spends more hours with the children, there is no one who can replace dad.
Yet how often do I forget that or even downplay my husband’s role in our family?
I sometimes find myself focused on the negative—he’s sitting at the computer while I do the dishes … (I should add that he’s usually at the computer balancing our bank account, but I digress.) I caught myself grumbling about something similar the other day, and then I felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit.
All the wonderful things my husband does flashed across my mind. He helps put the kids to bed, he prays with them, he is the disciplinarian in the family (our dog even listens to him). He takes off work to pick up our youngest child while I rush the other child to the doctor. He takes our eldest daughter out on special dates.
He actually does the dishes—a lot. He fixes the toilet. He mows the grass. He is our spiritual and financial leader. He is our hero.
Why then, when I have such a wonderful husband, do I sometimes focus on the negative?
Sadly, I’m human. I think it is much easier to focus on the negative rather than the positive. I tend to see situations through my own point of view, rather than look at things through his perspective.
But what a difference it makes when I focus on his wonderful qualities and take a walk in his shoes, so to speak. Even more so when I respect and praise him in front of my children.
I am looking forward to this Father’s Day.
We can’t buy my hubby all the expensive toys we’d like to, but we can focus on his wonderful qualities and spend the day showing him how much he means to us and thank him for being such a great husband and dad.
Now that I have been married almost 50 years (3 more days), I find it is essential to focus and pray about the positive. I give thanks each day for the help that my husband has given us over the years. Even people he meets at the “bus club” (picking up grandson at bus stop along with other moms) enjoy talking to him as a father. Thanks to all the fathers that have come before and after us.
