I had my first four children in three and one half years. My oldest, a girl, was so easy to keep up with through her high school and college years. She was diligent about calling home and checking on the family. Not so, with my boys. There were few phone calls and no notes or letters. The boys living in town came by when they were hungry for home cooking or needed a care package. I truly understand that boys and girls are innately different from birth.
As a mom, it sometimes hurts when your son may forget to call you on your birthday. But this must always be our response: to care for our children in spite of their forgetfulness.
Caring is shown to your children by not forgetting to care for them. I must call my sons and remind them that their mom hasn’t heard from them and I need to know that they are okay. I care by constantly praying for what I know to be their specific needs. I send care packages of their favorites and because we set up their checking accounts when they were young men, I have access to those accounts. For a son or daughter in college, an occasional deposit to their account is my way of saying, “I love you and will always care for you.”
A mother’s love is visible to her children when they are present and close by. But for the children that may live further away, we need to make sure they can get a tangible “hug” from their mother when they least expect it. (Whether they deserve a hug or not).
I believe God knows just when our children needs these hugs and He prompts us to send a note that they can read over and over again. Our Father knows that our children, even the most self-assured of them, still need the arms of their mothers when life may have them wounded or discouraged.
So, I beg you to send your child a hug today. There are many ways to do this but the receiver will feel like you wrapped up that old kiss that says “let mommy kiss it and make it better.”
P.S. When you send a “hug” to your child, please remember to occasionally sign your note this way:
Love, from Daddy and Mommy
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
