Not too long ago as my family and I left the grocery store, we had something very sobering happen. As we stood in line to check out, we were talking, laughing, and doing whatever else it is you do when you are waiting in line. We paid for our groceries and as we pushed the cart across the parking lot we heard a lady yell, “Excuse me! Excuse me!” It was dark out, the area isn’t a very safe area, and we wanted to quickly load our groceries and go home. The lady continued to yell, “Excuse me!”

We finally turned around and as she approached us my husband asked, “How can I help you?”

I recognized her as the lady who had been behind us in the line. She asked, “Are you a Christian family?”

We answered, “Yes.”

“I thought so,” she said. “You can tell!” We chatted for a bit and then she was gone.

This made for an interesting conversation as we drove home. We were all pretty stunned, to be honest, and wondered what she had seen that would make her want to run after us in a parking lot.

On another night that woman’s response could have been different—there have been times I have been impatient or the kids have had little spats as we stood in line. This just happened to be a really good night!

We felt very humbled and grateful for this experience. It served as a reminder that we never really know when someone is watching us. As I face each day, I pray that I’ll remember that I am stepping out into a watching world. I am also living before the God who sees not only my actions but the attitude of my heart as well. I pray that I will be reminded to do all to the glory of God!

  1. What a wonderful reminder Gina. You are such a talented writer.
This same thing happened quite a few years ago for our family too. We were all outside early on a Saturday morning, working to put on a garage sale. An elderly couple was walking by our house and stopped. They began talking with one of our children and when I walked up to greet them, they said the very same thing. When I asked how they knew? The elderly woman said that she could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit here.
…just like I can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit with your gift of writing.
    Blessings to you,
    Joanne

  2. You give hope and encouragement. Bless you for that.
Yours is the hardest task. Loving the unlovely.
It is I believe, God's will and the very manifestation of the Lord.
Love and God's Blessings to one and all!
