“Mom, can you put a DVD in a CD player? How about a CD in a DVD player?” My inquisitive son is always thinking up these kinds of questions, usually perfectly timed and delivered right after corralling him into bed. Sometimes it’s a question about automobile design or the maximum speed of jets (specifically, an F-22 Raptor). Other times it’s something more ambiguous like the logistics of living in a world without gravity. “Wouldn’t you want to try that, Mom? It would be so cool!”

Every day there are new mothering challenges. Every day, another reason to sigh or bust out laughing. The choice as Mother-In-Charge is all mine. These precious little people have wormed their way into my heart so deeply. How is it I can lose it so quickly in response to their childlike impulsiveness?

I think back to days of diaper changes, naptimes, and drowsy post-nap book snuggles with a still-warm blanky and whoever was their favorite stuffed animal at the time. Yes, as older, wiser women around me back then did predict, the days went all too quickly. Why didn’t I stop to breathe more, to soak up the sweetness of the moment? Probably because I was too tired. Too overwhelmed to think, let alone gulp in anything but coffee.

God has given me a gift: TODAY. Tomorrow will have its own issues, its own concerns and cares, but today, today I can choose to immerse myself in His goodness. I can bask in thankfulness as I run a towel over my child’s sweet smelling hair after a shower. I can choose to leave the laundry piles and agree to yet another game of Uno (at least until after the sillies go to bed — might be dangerous to let the laundry department to get too out of hand).

Just as God takes delights in me, so I can choose to see the value of my children, the gift that they are. I can choose to open up my heart and hear the gentle whisper yet one more time of how much the Creator loves me. Today.

  1. Thanks for the reminder, Anne.
My fav part of being a mom is the fullness and joy I would never have experienced otherwise. I am thankful to have learned so much about love from such little packages. 🙂 (Although they get big really fast…)
