25 Encouraging Bible Verses for Moms: God’s Word for the Overwhelmed

Encouraging bible verses for moms - Mother kissing baby's cheek

Growing up, I told my parents that I was never having kids. Instead, I wanted to travel the world, get super rich, and eventually have a pet monkey. (Yes, I promise these are all things I said.)

So of course here I am today married, in the suburbs with a mortgage, seemingly endless housework, and two kids.  Not exactly the wild, extravagant life I pictured!

But oh, it has been so good. Of course in the early days, like so many moms, I struggled a lot. And to be honest, there are still days that I struggle with feeling unequipped, exhausted, or anxious about the future and our family.

That’s why I’m so grateful for Scripture and the promises we have in God’s Word, including these encouraging Bible verses for moms that we can cling to in every season.

What does the Bible say about motherhood?

We see so many examples of healthy motherhood in the Bible. Here’s a little of what the Bible says about motherhood.

1. Motherhood is a calling.

From God fulfilling his promise to Sarah that she would bear a child to Mary raising Jesus, God’s Son, we see time and again the important part that mothers play in the foundations of our Christian faith.

Motherhood is a God-given calling, one that isn’t to be taken lightly! If you’re a mom, you have an important assignment on your life.

2. Children are a gift from the Lord.

Next, our children are a gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). But that doesn’t mean things are always hunky-dory. Our children sanctify and stretch us through trying times. They test our patience, and they help us to fully understand what love is and become more like Jesus.

3. God honors the sacrifice of motherhood.

If no one else says it, I will. Motherhood is a sacrifice. We often give up our time, our preferences, our plans, and our sleep for the sake of our kids. God sees our selfishness and sacrifices, and He honors all that we do in love for our family.

What is God’s Purpose for Mothers?

When you become a mom, it can be easy to feel like God’s purpose for mothers is simply to take care of everyone else. Plan the dinner menu, keep the house clean, make sure the kids are entertained, keep your husband happy!

But really God’s purpose for mothers is rooted in yes, sacrifice, but also love and influence.

Moms are called to nurture, teach, guide, and reflect God’s heart in their homes. It’s not just about keeping the kids fed and vaguely clean (though, yes, that too). It’s about shaping souls and being a living picture of God’s love, comfort, and faithfulness.

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” – Proverbs 1:8

From the very beginning, God designated motherhood to be a holy assignment—one that’s messy, miraculous, and meaningful. In the end, when our kids grow older, a mother is to be a beacon of wisdom and given honor for all she has done.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life.” – Ephesians 6:1-3

Bible Verses About a Mother’s Love

What does a mother’s love look like and what power does it have? Here are a few verses about a mother’s love.

1. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” – Proverbs 31:25-27

Great Moms from the Bible

Looking for a little inspiration and hope on your own mom journey? Look no further than some of the great moms from the Bible. Here are 5 of my favorites:

1. Hannah – A Mom Who Prayed First (1 Samuel 1)

Hannah didn’t just ask God for a child—she dedicated Samuel right back to Him. She is the ultimate example of a mom holding her dreams loosely and trusting God completely.

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.” – 1 Samuel 1:27-28

2. Mary – The Willing Servant-Mom (Luke 1:26-38)

Of course we had to include Jesus’ mother in here! As a young teen, Mary said yes to God’s plan with courage and humility. Being the mother of Jesus wasn’t going to be easy, but she trusted God’s bigger picture, even when she didn’t understand it.

I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.” – Luke 1:38

3. Lois & Eunice – Faith That Runs in the Family (2 Timothy 1:3-5)

This mom and grandmother duo passed down their faith so effectively, that it helped raise an important leader in the church, Timothy.

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” – Luke 1:5

4. Jochebed – The Brave Protector (Exodus 2:1-10)

In the Old Testament, Moses’ mom risked everything to save her baby. I mean, she literally trusted God with her child’s life in a basket! Brave doesn’t even begin to cover it.

“But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket[a] for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.” – Exodus 2:3

5. The Proverbs 31 Woman – Mom Goals on Paper (Proverbs 31)

You’ve probably heard a lot about her, and you can find out more here. But just know that this woman is organized, wise, entrepreneurial, and deeply rooted in faith. There are dozens of lessons and takeaways from this passage of Scripture for us as women.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” – Proverbs 31:28-29

One final thing…

I know it can be easy to look at these examples of motherhood from the Bible and all these commands God has given us, and feel overwhelmed. That is not our intention here.

We live in a day and age where comparison is a constant factor in our parenting. Are we raising our kids the right way? Are we good moms? Are we doing enough?

I want to encourage you that God’s grace can cover every mistake, every fear or worry you have as you raise your family.

Mama, the best thing you can do for your family is to give your own worries up to God. Stay in Scripture. Pray for your family consistently and watch what God will do. I hope you’re encouraged by these verses today!
