Snow day recipes

Last Updated on February 29, 2024

I’ll never forget my brothers, sister, and I huddling around the radio, silently pleading, “Please say District 140.”

As soon as the words were uttered in serious radio-announcer-monotone, we would all erupt with, “Snow day!” A pajama-wearing, cocoa-drinking, ice cream-making, fort-building, carefree day!

As a mom, I still get excited about a snow day. My cupboard is always stocked with ingredients for tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, Snowman Soup, and Snow Ice Cream (recipes below).

Pajamas are mandatory, unless warmer clothes are needed to play outside. Twister, Life, and Charades are pulled out of the game closet. Bed-making is optional, as we will all end up in Mom’s bed with a stack of books at some point, anyway. Playing in the snow usually happens in the late afternoon, followed by warm bubble baths. After an early dinner, we watch a movie with popcorn. Housework is put on hold as our family makes memories, just as my mom did with us.

This Snowman Soup can also be a super cute gift when attached with this poem:

When the weather outside is frightful,
Snowman soup can be delightful.
May it warm your spirit and your soul.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

When you feel a chill go “brrrrr,”
Use the peppermint stick to stir.
Add hot water and sip it slow.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
