My brothers, sister, and I would huddle around the radio, silently pleading, “Please say District 140.” As soon as the words were uttered in serious radio-announcer-monotone, we would all erupt with, “Snow day!” a pajama-wearing, cocoa-drinking, ice cream-making, fort-building, carefree day!

As a mom, I still get excited about a snow day. My cupboard is stocked with ingredients for tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, Snowman Soup, and Snow Ice Cream (recipes below). Pajamas are mandatory, unless warmer clothes are needed to play outside. Twister, Life, and Charades are pulled out of the game closet. Bed-making is optional, as we will all end up in Mom’s bed with a stack of books at some point, anyway. Playing in the snow usually happens in the late afternoon, followed by warm bubble baths. After an early dinner, we watch a movie with popcorn. Housework is put on hold as our family makes memories, just as my mom did with us.

Hearty Tomato Soup

  • 1 can condensed tomato soup
  • Milk
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • Basil to taste

Empty can of condensed tomato soup into microwave-safe dish. Fill empty soup can with milk and stir into tomato soup. Add undrained can of tomatoes. Add basil to taste. Microwave until warm.

Snow Ice Cream

  • 1 gallon clean snow (put a large bowl outside when it begins to snow)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups milk
  • Snowman decorations (sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, fruit leather, etc.), optional

Stir the sugar and vanilla into the snow, then add just enough milk to desired consistency. Scoop ice cream into balls. Make an indoor snowman and decorate. Enjoy immediately!

Snowman Soup

  • 1 package hot chocolate mix
  • 3 Hershey’s Kisses (the snowman’s eyes and nose)
  • 10 mini-marshmallows (snowman’s buttons)
  • 1 candy cane (snowman’s frozen scarf)

Make hot chocolate according to directions, let the kids add the Kisses and marshmallows, and stir with candy cane. Also great with Snow Flake Cocoa (made in microwave when in a hurry) with Hershey’s Hugs.

Snowman Soup is a cute gift when attached with this poem:

When the weather outside is frightful,
Snowman soup can be delightful.
May it warm your spirit and your soul.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

When you feel a chill go “brrrrr,”
Use the peppermint stick to stir.
Add hot water and sip it slow.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
