Have you ever felt yourself shrinking back in your everyday life because you felt not good enough?

Maybe you’ve given up on pursuing a passion or hobby because of fear. Maybe you’re feeling defeated and overwhelmed in raising your children. Maybe you wonder how God could really love someone like you, or you’re wrestling with if God’s Word is actually true.

So often we can let Satan’s lies interject into our hearts and minds without realizing it and allow those lies to impact every aspect of our lives. But there’s another way.

Instead, you and I can overcome the lies of the enemy with God’s Truth.

If you’re feeling defeated, forgotten or like you want to give up today, this my friend is for you. Here’s how to take your rightful place as a child of God and fight every lie of the enemy over your life.

How to overcome the lies of the enemy

Here are 6 key ways that you can fight back when the devil tells you lies and tries to defeat you. Write them down, take them with you and share them with a friend! This is a great list to come back to for encouragement anytime.

1. Remember there are spiritual battles happening all around us.

In our journey of faith, we have to acknowledge the reality of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Knowing this, we’ve got to stay vigilant, recognizing that Satan is the Father of lies, and his lies are part of a broader spiritual battle. He will never tell us the truth. When we have a full grasp on our identity in Christ and understand the nature of the spiritual battles around us, we can better equip ourselves to overcome the lies and deceptions that Satan so desperately wants us to believe that keep us from believing God’s promises.

2. Arm yourself with the truth of God.

The most powerful weapon you and I have against the lies of the devil is the truth of God’s Word (Psalm 119:105). When we dedicate time every day to immerse ourselves in Scripture, we can fortify our minds and hearts for the day with divine wisdom and discernment.

Even Jesus Himself resisted Satan’s temptations in the wilderness by quoting Scripture (Matthew 4:4-10), an example of how the power of God’s truth can overcome the enemy’s lies. We have to focus on regularly studying the Word of God, because it equips us to recognize the schemes of the devil, and empowers us to stand firm in our faith.

Need a little inspiration? I love the passage in Ephesians 6 about putting on the armor of God, and there really are no better instructions for how to defend our hearts, minds and lives with God’s truth.

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
- Ephesians 6:10-17

3. Declare the promises of God

Speaking God’s promises over our lives is another powerful way that we can counteract the lies of the devil (Isaiah 55:11). When we face doubt or fear, we can boldly proclaim Scriptures that remind us of God’s promises and good plan for our lives. By saying these truths (out loud!), we align our hearts with God’s will and reinforce our trust in His faithfulness. When we declare God’s promises and call on the name of Jesus in our lives, we invite His peace and assurance to take over, dispelling the enemy’s lies with the light of His truth.

Here are a few of my favorite promises of God to memorize, recite and share with my kids:

  • “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” – Proverbs 18:10 (ESV)
  • “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11
  • “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4
  • “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8

4. Get connected to the Holy Spirit

Building a deep relationship with the Holy Spirit is essential part of overcoming the lies of the devil (John 16:13). By inviting the Holy Spirit to guide us, we gain insight and wisdom beyond our own understanding.

Romans 8:26 assures us, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness.” Through prayer, and surrendering to His leading, we allow the Holy Spirit to expose the falsehoods in our life and lead us into truth. When we’re intimately connected with the Spirit, we’ll more easily be able to recognize and resist the enemy’s deceptions, walking in the freedom and discernment He provides.

5. Question the enemy’s lies.

We are confronted with the lies of the devil on a daily basis, sometimes without realizing it! So whenever we’re believing something that isn’t good or peaceful, we have to challenge it’s validity against the truth of God’s Word (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Instead of accepting every negative thought or accusation in our minds, we can choose to interrogate them in light of Scripture. By questioning the enemy’s lies and holding them up to the standards of truth found in Scripture, we disarm his tactics and strengthen our resolve to walk in the light of God’s truth.

6. Share the good news.

Proclaiming the good things God has done not only brings hope to others but it also strengthens our own faith (Romans 10:14-15)! When we share the truth of God’s love and salvation with those around us, we combat the lies of the devil by spreading the light of Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:14-16). This also helps to reinforce our own convictions so we can stand firm against the enemy in the future. Not to mention it is our call to share the gospel with others! A great way to do this is through our testimony of what God has done for us.

Friend, in the battle against the lies of the enemy, we will never be able to win in our own strength. That’s why we MUST be armed with the unshakable truth of God’s Word. And put on that armor over, and over and over again everyday.

Remember, no matter how you feel right now, through Christ, we are more than conquerors! And with God’s truth as our shield, we can overcome every lie the enemy throws our way.
