What is your worth, mom?Recently I saw a book entitled something like “The Best Couples Die Rich.”

Really? Is that the goal? To chase the wind and die trying to hold it? To end life thinking, “Well, at least I drove a really nice car …”

We live in a culture of greed. And I’m not talking about them.  They aren’t the only ones infected. We all are. Even if we don’t show signs of the disease, we are not immune to its devastating effects.

So much of the world tells us our actions are only worthwhile if they produce money. And motherhood, not being a money-making venture, is often seen as lacking value. I’ve heard people say things like, “I wish I could sit around playing all day with kids, but I have a real job.”

The underlying message in that kind of statement is caring for children lacks value. But a mother has more value to her children and family than anything material this world offers. Motherhood is one of the most valuable occupations on earth. Check out Proverbs 31:10. How valuable is that mom to her family? Far more than rare jewels. She is priceless.

I would like to add: I’m talking to all moms, not just stay-at-home moms. In fact, most of the stay-at-home moms I know have several occupations. It’s just that they usually see “momming” as their primary occupation. Many of my working mom friends have the same heart–mothering is their most-valued occupation. I can’t count how many moms I know who have taken huge pay cuts so they can work around their children’s schedules. Some moms use their days off to attend a field trip with their child rather than having a “me day.” Other moms gave up a bigger house or nicer car–chasing the wind–to “Be the Mom,” as Tracey would say.

If you leave this blog with one thought, please let it be this: chase your family and not the wind. Being the Mom is the most valuable occupation you will ever have. Enjoy the MOMents while they last.

As a mother who has stood at the edge of eternity, I urge you to take this to heart. When you reach the end of your life, you will not look back and be happy you drove such a nice car, despite what the commercials and finance books tell you. Your heart will long for the ones most precious to your heart: family. People. Your children, grandchildren, dear friends, those you have cared for and loved and poured your heart and soul into. Those moments you will never regret.

Moms are so underrated. Wish everyone had your perspective on motherhood, whether a stay at home mom or a working mom with her heart at home. The older I get the more I realize that so much of the hype of new cars and big houses are exactly what you say, “Chasing the wind”.

Yes what you say is so true. I have been home along time, and if worked it was part time only for their schedules etc. Hugs and thank you.

  5. Thank you so much for your words, I really feel god has spoken to me through your words and I have now decided not to put my 2 year old son in nursery because of this.
