candle-hands-prayer

We kneel with each of you in prayer for the children … and their parents. Our hearts ache for the young lives, and indeed every life, lost in the harrowing tragedy that played out before our eyes yesterday in the news reports from Moore, Oklahoma.

Tragedies happen in our world every day, but yesterday we witnessed it up close, and our hearts squeezed tightly from the weight of compassion and grief. We were assaulted with the cold stark reality of lives cut far too short.

Again.

I wonder, without the hope of heaven, how does one make sense of the brevity of life?

I found myself singing an old familiar hymn yesterday. The tender words penned by Horatio Spafford, in 1874 when his four young daughters, and 226 others, drowned in a tragedy at sea.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well … with my soul … it is well … it is well … with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O My soul!

But Lord, tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait, the sky, not the grave, is our goal; oh trump of the angel, oh voice of the Lord, blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, even so, it is well with my soul.

May your heart be soothed today with the assurance that turning to the Lord allows an “It Is Well With My Soul” understanding of eternity.

Join with us in praying for the families affected by this tragedy.
